De Rossi had been on the road to recovery after three weeks out with a hamstring problem, which forced him to miss four League games and the first leg of Boca’s Copa Libertadores Superclasico with River Plate.

However, ESPN reports the midfielder broke down again yesterday with the same problem and is currently working away from the squad.

The 36-year-old has played just five times for the Argentine giants since arriving in July and was denied an Italy farewell this month.

“Knowing Daniele, he’ll continue his journey with Boca and he won’t abandon them,” said Cufre, who played alongside De Rossi at the Olimpico between 2002 and 2006 and is now the Coach of Mexican side Atlas.

“He has no regrets about leaving, he’s very interested in Argentine culture. Now he’s out due to injury, but when he recovers I’m sure we’ll see him starting.

“His character is more Argentine than European, but now he’s suffering from this long injury: he came to Argentina to play, not for the money.

“Seeing him out hurts and he’ll surely be feeling down.”
