Daniele De Rossi is optimistic about Euro 2012 despite Italy’s 1-0 friendly home loss to Uruguay on Tuesday night.

The Azzurri suffered defeat last night, but the Roma midfielder was happy with how the team played at times.

“It’s a shame about the result, but we ended the year with yet another very positive performance,” he noted.

“This team has an identity and has made leaps forward after a World Cup that had knocked us right down.

“In 2012 we will come back together and the thing that gives me hope is that we are consistent in terms of performance.”

Sebastian Fernandez scored the only goal of the night after just three minutes – a strike which De Rossi thinks changed the face of the game.

“I didn’t see that much of a gap between Italy and Uruguay,” he added.

“They took the lead straight away and had the chance to play on the counter-attack, which is what they tend to prefer.

“But conceding a goal like that and falling to a defeat is probably best done now in a friendly than in another situation…”
