Matteo Darmian believes Inter need to ‘play a careful game’ against Manchester City in the Champions League final, highlighting how Pep Guardiola’s side ‘have great champions’.

The Nerazzurri are the only thing standing between the Cityzens and the Treble, with Guardiola’s team already securing the Premier League and FA Cup.

For Inter, this is their first Champions League final since their own Treble success back in 2010, whilst Manchester City are hungry to finally lift the trophy after losing to domestic rivals Chelsea back in the 2021 final.

Speaking to gathered reporters via TMW, Darmian first looked ahead to the Champions League final against Manchester City.

“It will be a special match, we will face the strongest team in the world but we will play it, we will play our game.”

He touched on his expectations for the final in Istanbul.

“I expect a difficult match but we have to be aware of our qualities and play a careful game with determination.”

The 33-year-old commented on how to stop Manchester City star Erling Haaland.

“There’s not only him, they have great champions and we will have to play a great game defensively, not only us defenders but the whole team.”

He was asked about the Nerazzurri’s turning point this season.

“Choosing a precise Champions League game is difficult, but the first leg against Barcelona was fundamental.”

The defender spoke about his role in Simone Inzaghi’s squad.

“I am available and I always try to improve, where the coach puts me doesn’t matter, I try to make the right contribution to the team.”

Finally, Darmian discussed the lessons he learnt about a three-man defence from teammate Milan Skriniar.

“Milan in this role is one of the best in the world, even just watching him you learn something. He is a great player and has been important.”
