Domenico Cristico has called for an end to ‘useless controversy’ after he was criticised by Genoa fans for not taking an injury-time penalty against Roma.

Antonio Sanabria wasted the chance to give Genoa a last-gasp victory over Roma on Sunday, with Criscito coming under fire for what supporters perceived to be a lack of leadership from their club captain.

“I’m hearing all sorts,” responded the defender on Instagram.

Antonio Sanabria wasted the chance to give Genoa a last-gasp victory over Roma on Sunday, with Criscito coming under fire for what supporters perceived to be a lack of leadership from their club captain.

“I’m hearing all sorts,” responded the defender on Instagram.

“[People] are always ready to whip up controversy. You don’t have the balls, you don’t have the courage and so on…

“When Sanabria and I have been on the field together he’s always been the penalty taker, yet that’s enough to whip up controversy.

“The penalty unfortunately didn’t go in but, if there’s the possibility of letting Sanabria take another, I’ll do it again.

“I was happy with the team's performance. Enough of this useless controversy! Here’s another…

“My second message [‘you broke my balls’] wasn’t a reference to all Genoa fans, only those who do nothing but tell me I’m not worthy of being a captain or that I came here to hibernate…

“I’m here because I love Genoa and this situation makes me suffer… You can say that I’ve been poor as a player, but don’t judge me as a person…

“I apologise to those who have been offended by my words. Now the important thing is to stick together and end this season as well as possible.”
