Alessandro Costacurta won’t rule out a return to Milan – ‘it’s my home, and Leonardo is a friend of mine’.

The former defender is currently sub-commissioner of the FIGC, but will leave that role in October to continue his punditry with Sky, and his work to become a director.

“I will return to Sky to continue studying and proceed in my career as a director,” Costacurta explained in an interview with Corriere della Sera.

“That’s my path and thanks to [CONI] President Giovanni Malago, FIGC commissioner Roberto Fabbricini and director general Michele Uva I’ve had a beautiful education.

“Then we’ll see if my future will be with the Federation, the Lega or a club.

“Milan is my home, and I haven’t fallen out with anyone there. Leonardo is a friend of mine, I wouldn’t exclude it.”

Costacurta was instrumental in introducing the idea of B teams to Serie C, but it appears only Juventus will enter one this season…

“Juventus have been winning for seven years, it’s an enlightened club. There were seven or eight requests but only two places.

“Milan didn’t make it and then there wasn’t enough time to replace them. It’s not a failure but a first victory, a beginning.”

But aren’t B teams taking away places from historic clubs?

“Let’s not joke about this, there are 80 teams in Serie B and Serie C and may struggle to sustain themselves,” Costacurta pointed out.

“Every year a lot of them go bankrupt, the second teams aren’t taking a space away from anyone. Football has to be sustainable, how can it be that a club like Bari can disappear?

“I’ll leave in October, but I hope to leave among the insults and the swear words while defending the sacrosanct choice of B teams.”

Costacurta also took the time to discuss the rising talents in Italian football.

“Federico Chiesa is the most talented, in a few years he’ll be up for the Ballon d’Or. Then Nicolò Barella of Cagliari and of the Under-19s Sandro Tonali of Brescia.”
