Empoli President Fabrizio Corsi says Coach Marco Giampaolo ‘deserves the Milan job’ and reveals foreign interest in Riccardo Saponara.

Giampaolo took over from Maurizio Sarri last summer and took the Tuscan side to 10th place in his first season, before confirming on Saturday that he’ll leave at the end of the season.

He has been heavily linked with the Rossoneri job and today Corsi responded to those rumours.

“He deserves it,” Corsi said to Supernews.

“It’s something that I sincerely hope for him, after what’s been a slightly see-sawing career.

“This year he’s shown that he can be a Coach at the top level. It’d be a great opportunity for him.”

Corsi also commented on the future of Saponara, the attacking midfielder who has been rumoured to be following Giampaolo out the exit door this summer.

“Saponara is an important player who will find an important position at a big club, but there aren’t any real talks open yet,” Corsi explained.

“At the moment there are signals of interest and that’s it. From Italian clubs? No, at the moment from a foreign team.

“Then if there’s interest from Milan or Roma in the future we’ll know further down the line, the transfer market is just beginning.

“Obviously the teams that can do something right now are those that are certain about already having their Coach for next season.”
