Italy, and in particular Lombardy, has overtaken China as the country with the most Coronavirus deaths. “We don’t understand why it’s so aggressive. The virus might’ve mutated.”

The pandemic has ground Italy to a standstill with over 4,000 deaths and experts warn we have not yet even reached the peak in the Peninsula.

Over the last 48 hours, 1,420 people died in Italy after contracting COVID-19, the vast majority of them in the Lombardy region (3,095).

“There’s something in Lombardy that we cannot quite comprehend,” said Maria Rita Gismondo, director of the laboratory of clinical microbiology, virology and diagnosis of bioemergent solutions at the Sacco hospital in Milan.

“It surpassed the number of deaths in China in an infinitesimally smaller area and in less time. Something strange is happening,” she told AdnKronos news agency.

“We don’t understand why it’s so aggressive in Lombardy. All hypotheses are on the table, but one is that the virus has mutated. I appeal to the scientific community: let us unite to understand. If we all study a small part, we’ll probably get a bigger picture.”
