Carpi secured their place in the Last 16 of the Coppa Italia, scraping past Vicenza 2-1.

Luca Marrone spurned a good chance with 16 minutes on the clock, having been set-up by Raphael Martinho, while Ryder Matos tried to catch out Vicenza ‘keeper Richard Marcone at his near post.

The breakthrough didn’t arrive until after the break, when Gaetano Letizia’s cross found Matos in the box and he headed it beyond the goalkeeper.

Things went from bad to worse for Vicenza with an hour played, with Mario Sampirisi conceding a penalty for a foul on Borriello before being given his marching orders.

The striker dusted himself down to dispatch the spot-kick into the net and put the Biancorossi within reach of the last eight.

What seemed to be a straightforward path to the next round was complicated with 15 minutes to play, when Leonardo Gatto pulled one back with a penalty of his own.

The on-loan Atlanta man had only been on the pitch for a matter of minutes, having come on as a substitute.

With four minutes to play, Marrone got on the end of Andrea Lazzari’s corner, but couldn’t find the target with his effort.

As the game headed into injury time, Marcone got across well to tip a venomous Kevin Lasagna shot wide.
