The former Juventus” data-scaytid=”4″>Juventus boss has been one of the favourites to assume the Azzurri post ever since his shock resignation from the Old Lady earlier this summer.

Tavecchio has also revealed he has held talks with other potential candidates for the job, though he is thought to have a heavy preference for Conte.

This morning the head of Italian football’s governing body held a telephone conversation with the man who led Juve to three successive Scudetti, with a face to face meeting between the duo set to follow.

“I have spoken to Conte and others,” Tavecchio is quoted as saying in numerous media sources this afternoon. “But I have not yet had a definitive answer [about the job].

"He is a good person and we spoke normally, but I didn't only talk to him. The decision on a new CT will happen before Monday. I am optimistic for the federation and for Italy."

According to respected journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, any doubts Conte might be having about accepting the job are nothing to do with the financial package being offered.

Instead, he is said to be looking for assurances that he would be given complete autonomy when making footballing decisions.
