Former Roma fullback Cicinho was not impressed by Arturo Vidal’s decision to join Flamengo, suggesting he wanted an easy end to his career.

The 35-year-old Chilean midfielder recently signed an 18-month contract with the Brazilian club, which expires in December 2023. His departure was key for Inter as it significantly lowered their wage bill, giving them a little more room to manoeuvre as they look to pick up a few more reinforcements.

Speaking to UOL, Cicinho did not think highly of Vidal’s choice to sign for Flamengo and he certainly didn’t mince his words.

“Vidal is a very good player, but at Flamengo he’ll become nothing. He posted a video dancing… He’s a guy who’s coming to the end of his career.

“In my opinion he came to enjoy retirement, a beach life. There is so much talk that Vidal had options, but why didn’t he go somewhere else? Why did he go to Flamengo? Do you think it was for love? We’re kidding ourselves!”

Vidal spent the last two years of his career with the Nerazzurri, joining on a free transfer from Barcelona in September 2020. He was explicitly wanted by Antonio Conte but he failed to particularly impress in the Lombardy capital and he only started twice in the league last season under Simone Inzaghi.

In total, Vidal made 70 appearances across all competitions for Inter, scoring four goals and providing six assists.

  1. the mans 35 yrs old – what do you expect from the guy, doubt he will be lose his determination, mans a animal

  2. He will enjoy life, sure, but on the pitch you know what you are going to get from Arturo.

It’s not that Inter fans wanted him gone, we just wanted him to take a pay cut. Same with Dzeko, and Alexis Sanchez.
