The Bianconeri dominated at Old Trafford and are now runaway leaders of Group H with nine points compared to Manchester United on four, Valencia two and Young Boys one.

“We had a great first half, moving around, keeping possession constantly and frankly we had regrets that it was only 1-0,” the captain told Sky Sport Italia.

“We were a little tired and far too static in the second half, especially as Manchester United are a very physical side and strong on the counter.

“I’m sure we will learn and improve from here, as it’s still early in the season. Our draw with Genoa came after the break for international duty, while in that game we were a little too superficial and complacent. That complacency wasn’t a risk in Manchester against a side like United.

“I can’t play the way I did 10 years ago, but I can read the game better and that allows me to use up less energy so I’m sharp in the crucial moments.”
