In a surprising new development to the transfer saga involving the two Old Lady defenders, it is claimed Caldara has overtaken Rugani on new Stamford Bridge boss Maurizio Sarri’s transfer wishlist.

23-year-old Rugani has been heavily linked with a move to the London club throughout the summer, with Juve reported to be willing to do business for a fee of around €50m.

Up until today, Caldara had been primarily touted for a transfer to Milan. The Bianconeri are thought to be involved in negotiations with the Rossoneri over a potential player-exchange including Leonardo Bonucci.

However, the Daily Mirror now states Chelsea have turned their attentions to Caldara. Following talks in the south of France, it has apparently emerged that the former Atalanta man would be available for around €5m cheaper than Rugani.

According to the British daily, further talks are scheduled to take place between the English Premier League side and the Old Lady, who are reluctant to sell Caldara but cannot offer him guaranteed first-team football.

Corriere dello Sport reported this morning that the futures of Caldara and Rugani would be decided within the next 48 hours.

But with Bonucci’s desire to re-join Juve factored in, as well as the fact Milan and Chelsea are both also targeting Bianconeri forward Gonzalo Higuain, there are a number of issues still to be resolved.
