Chelsea are reportedly hopeful of making Gonzalo Higuain’s loan from Juventus permanent for less than €36m.

Chelsea paid around €9m to take over Milan’s loan for Higuain last month and agreed an €36m option to buy for the summer, as well as an €18m option to extend the arrangement by a further season.

However, ESPN claims the Blues are confident Juve will ‘accept a lower price’ due to the Bianconeri’s ‘financial commitments’, which saw them spend €112m on Cristiano Ronaldo, tie him down to a contract worth €31m per season and sign Aaron Ramsey on ‘a €7.5m salary’.

The website explains the Old Lady structured their deal with the Londoners so that they could ‘remove the annual €18m cost’ of owning the striker.

However, it warns his future is ‘closely tied’ to that of manager Maurizio Sarri, whose position has been thrown into doubt after heavy defeats to Bournemouth and Manchester City.

The 31-year-old, for his part, has scored two goals since arriving from Milan – both of them coming against Premier League basement boys Huddersfield Town.
