Luciano Spalletti calls Carpi’s Fabrizio Castori “a great Coach” whose side can cause problems for his Roma.

The Giallorossi travel to Modena tomorrow to take on the relegation-battlers, and the tactician isn’t taking anything for granted.

“What’s dangerous about Carpi?” Spalletti considered in his pre-match Press conference.

“First of all, the Coach [Castori], the great and good of football might not know who he is, but he’s a great Coach. He transmits his fundamental ideas to his team.

“They wait for you at the edge of the box, leaving two players up on the halfway line, then they’ll hit you on the break.

“They have [Kevin] Lasagna up-front, and the first thing they do when they get the ball back is to try and release him.

“They have a great style of play, we’ve prepared but they remain a banana skin. They gave very little away against Napoli, they’re going through a good spell.

“The match is tomorrow [not Real Madrid on Wednesday] and everyone has that attitude. If I thought they didn’t I’d leave them at home.”

Spalletti was then asked about the difficulties of switching between a back-three and a back-four.

“The movements in a back-three or a back-four are not that different. The journey from four to three is very short.

“Look at Fiorentina, they’re innovative, they play in every way – three, four or five. Fiorentina can switch from three, to four, to five in a moment.

“You just have to know how to approach it, then if you make mistakes you can make changes.

“I have Simone Beccaccioli who is the analyst. He brings me the data which we need to take into account.

“We’ve only been caught offside six times since I came in. The risk of being caught offside is high, since everyone pushes their defences up, like Napoli do.

“They’re a perfect team in terms of style of play. I saw [Maurizio] Sarri do things at Empoli that I’ve never seen anyone do.

“I look at [Juventus Coach Max] Allegri and how he manages the squad, just look at [Simone] Zaza. Also [Manolo] Gabbiadini at Napoli seems like a starter, so he’ll always be ready when needed.

“In terms of trying to break through the opposition defence, we’re ranked eighth. That’s more important than possession stats.

“Possession isn’t an end in itself if you don’t have it in the right areas.”
