Former Roma coach Fabio Capello hits out at José Mourinho saying that the Special One ’caused economic damage’ to the Giallorossi by publicly criticising his players.

The Portuguese coach is under fire after Roma’s disappointing results this term. The Giallorossi rescued a point against Sassuolo yesterday thanks to a late goal of Bryan Cristante.

The Serie A side sit seventh in the table with 40 points in 25 games and are six points behind a Champions League placement.

Mourinho ha openly criticised his players in front of media over the last few weeks and Fabio Capello highlights how the coach’s behaviour is damaging the Giallorossi, on and off the pitch.

“He played his last card by offending his players,” Capello told Sky Sport Italia.

“I’ve never done it. I did criticise but tried to be respectful. I’ve always demanded and given respect. It’s the first rule I asked for: respect from everyone, players and staff members.

“If you offend players as Mourinho did, you create economic damage to the club and it’s something that must be taken into account.”

Last week, Il Corriere dello Sport reported that Mourinho accused Roma players of having no personality and ‘being without balls’ after their 2-0 loss against Inter in Coppa Italia.

Paolo Di Canio has also criticised Mourinho highlighting how he used the same approach during his time at Tottenham, which didn’t pay off.

10 thought on “Capello: ‘Mourinho caused economic damage to Roma’”
  1. Capello is correct, as he normally is. Jose is just as much to blame as the players in my opinion. He hasn’t been a good manager /coach for years now. His football is dull and negative in a tactical sense and his man management is disgraceful. Guys like Pioli at Milan put him to shame.

  2. Ok Dazziano!! Negative tactics?? Maybe watch a game before making stupid comments!! As for the post , how pathetic is it that players cannot be criticized, especially players who have not beaten a top team in the league in. 2 years!! So a manger is not allowed to criticize players because it might hurt their feelings, Then you have guys like a Crappelo telling Jose how to manage. Maybe win over 25 trophies first before you give an opinion about Mourinho

  3. Up the Spurs, one can criticize, or better said critique players, sure, but why not amongst themselves on the training ground? I think every coach in history must have in some way said something like this to their players at some point, but amongst themselves in the locker room or the training ground. I can’t recall any coach that publicly goes out and trashes their own squad. Capello has 13 trophies of his own. more than enough to comment on anybody. Mourinho is no supreme being. Sorry.

  4. @Up the Spurs statistics speak for themselves: 2020-21 Round 25 47 points, this year? 40 points. What did Roma gain this year other than a guy that publicly takes no responsibility for the poor results?

  5. Vero, I won’t use the word trash but rather challenge the mentality of the players. If you want to be better, you take every criticism as spring board to do better and not to sulk! They didn’t do well and it’s glaring.
When he’s praising them in public do we challenge him for doing so? We all are happy for the words or praise but when he critic his players, we are all sore and think it’s not good.
We don’t expect all coaches to be the same, I have seen where Mou basically accepted defeat as his fault so why cry when he says the plays have poor mentality….is it a lie?
We just have to be open to criticism to be better. A spirit that doesn’t accept defeat but rather gets fired to sweat blood on the field for the shirt for the club.
I am sure no coach will reject such type of players, players who won’t mind seating on the bench and are ready to be called upon whenever and won’t scream the world down.
These are the type of players he had in chelsea and Inter….

  6. Where are and how are the players Jose criticized at Man Utd and Tottenham doing now as they have coaches not criticizing them publicly? Have they been better or are such teams performing better now ?

  7. Critic in private may or may not have the psychological impact his looking for. Ibrahimovic said Mourinho made him a lion by pushing him in public for every to see.

  8. Jose wants results and players are responding to him. These players are getting better and will bring good results in future

  9. Up the Spurs and Sang, thank you very much… I don’t know why the hatred on Jose…everyone from the referee to the fans to the players, what has Jose done?? just trying to get the best out of his players?? he always gives his best and the players will go there and play rubbish, good question about Man Utd and Tottenham they are getting worst every day by day if you don’t want your coach to criticize publicly then play very well and get a good result which is the 3point, because the club is paying you, the club will not pay you and you go there to play rubbish then expect the coach to keep quit without talking, who those that??

  10. Fabio Capello make more sense when he is not talking, maybe he have to come back and take up the job,
