Fabio Capello says Carlo Ancelotti’s luck ‘is notorious’ but believes Real Madrid deserved to beat Manchester City and qualify for the Champions League Final.

Ancelotti has qualified for the fifth Champions League Final in his career, the most than any other coach. He will become the first manager to win the Champions League four times if Madrid beat Liverpool in the Final in Paris on May 28.

Last night, his Real Madrid side scored twice in the stoppages to send the game against City to extra time, where Karim Benzema netted the winner from the spot. “I saw a Real Madrid side convinced of their strength. They created chances, and Vinicius made two incredible errors,” Capello told Sky Sport Italia.

“Madrid were lucky at the right moment. Ancelotti’s luck is notorious, it’s the last throw of the dice bringing value. However, I liked Real Madrid. They played with determination trying not to be caught by surprise,” he continued.

“Ancelotti said he wanted a focused defence, and they were up to the task. They were lucky with that goal-line clearance, but in the end, I think the victory is deserved.”

Ancelotti became the first coach to win the domestic title in the top five European leagues last week. Capello also coached Real Madrid twice during his career, winning La Liga during both seasons in Madrid.

Ancelotti signed a three-year deal with the Merengues last summer after Massimiliano Allegri had rejected their contract offer, returning to Juventus.

  1. At least Ancelotti goes for it in games.

Capello’s Roma and Juve sides in Europe in the 00s was the most out of date rubbish you could ever put yourself through watching.

His tactic was defend, pack the midfield with ball-winners, and hoof it up front and hope for the best. Given they players he had then, his football was shocking.

  2. Real Madrid were lucky that Allegri turn them down
His out of date tactics would not have won last night
