The current Guangzhou Evergrande coach said the Bianconeri have “invested” a lot to help the club towards success in Europe, but they are currently occupied in a three-horse race for the Scudetto in Italy.
Maurizio Sarri’s men have lost twice in their last three games and the title race is wide open and the former Italy international concedes that hey have lost some of their supremacy in Italy.
“They are no longer as dominant as they were last season, but they are still top, though,” Cannavaro told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “And in the in Europe I don’t think they will have any problems with Lyon.
“They need to have their best players in the best condition possible when we arrive in April and May. The club has invested a lot for to win the Champions League and you need to be patient and improve you overall condition.”
The 46-year-old revealed that he gets excited by watching the trident Paulo Dybala, Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo together, but admitted that they could be a “burden” for the Old Lady.
“I can only speak from the outside, as a spectator. The coach sees them every day and knows the condition and every detail,” Cannavaro added. “It tickles me to see Dybala play with Cristiano and Higuain.
“Maybe it sometimes happens – like in Naples – that things don’t work out and the trident becomes a burden for the team.
“In addition to confirming himself, Ronaldo is devastating up front. But lately, he’s the only one scoring. They need balance.”
Ahead of the Euro 2020, the former World Cup winner has also praised Italy CT Roberto Mancini and said the former Inter coach has brough “the enthusiasm” back around the Azzurri.
“Roberto Mancini has done a great job,” Cannavaro told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “He has brought back the fun and the enthusiasm.
“In the centre, talents like [Sandro] Tonali, [Stefano] Sensi and [Nicolò] Barella are growing. Up front we have [Ciro] Immobile, [Lorenzo] Insigne, [Federico] Chiesa.
“I’m sad that [Federico] Bernardeschi is not playing a lot, I think he is very good. But I’m optimistic about the European Championship.”
