Lazio’s big January signing Antonio Candreva “will win over the critics,” said his agent, but fans jeer the man they think is a Roma supporter.

The controversy exploded just before his debut in Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Milan, as Candreva was welcomed by loud jeers and insults from the Stadio Olimpico crowd.

This is because a decade-old interview emerged in which the 14-year-old Candreva said “Daniele De Rossi is my inspiration and Francesco Totti is my idol.”

The former Cesena midfielder is from Rome and is eager to shake off the tag of a Giallorossi supporter.

“It’s a shame about the jeers, but Candreva will win over the critics,” assured agent Federico Pastorello.

“He was an intelligent signing and I tell the sceptics to wait a few games. Besides, he is not a Roma fan. That interview was an error of youth and most of his family are Lazio supporters.”

Candreva had also been linked with a January switch to Napoli.

“There was no chance of a co-ownership agreement with Napoli, so faced with the choice between Cesena or a loan at Lazio, he opted for the Biancocelesti.”
