The striker was a surprise inclusion given that he is only an Italian Under-21 international and has never been selected by Cesare Prandelli before.
“This is a point of departure for me and not an arrival,” the former Inter player, co-owned with Genoa, stated.
“I thank Prandelli for giving me this extraordinary chance, but I know that I have a lot of work to do in order for me to improve as a footballer.
“I’m really happy and emotional. I didn’t expect this but I will give it my all as it is everyone’s dream to train with La Nazionale.”
Destro, 21, moved to Tuscany in the summer and his 12 goals in 30 games helped the Bianconeri stay in the top flight.
“If I’m in the Italy squad then it is thanks to my teammates, boss Giuseppe Sannino and the environment at this club – they were fundamental elements to my campaign.”
