Torino President Urbano Cairo claimed VAR is used to “penalise” his team after a 1-1 draw with Cagliari, suggesting “they want to send Milan to Europe over us.”

The Granata are aiming for a European qualification spot and were leading before Simone Zaza saw red for swearing at referee Massimiliano Irrati.

It finished 1-1, the Sardinians ending the game with nine players, while Leonardo Pavoletti’s headed equaliser was originally ruled offside, a decision overturned by VAR.

Cairo claimed VAR missed a penalty for his side and pulled no punches when he spoke to the media after the game.

“They only go to VAR to punish us. The referee was unfair and biased, if you send a player off for swearing then you will always finish the game with 10 men,” the President told DAZN.

“Nicolò Barella did the same after 10 minutes and wasn’t sent off.”

Barella however was sent off late into the game for a second yellow card offence.

“We’ll be more determined next time. We won’t give up. I don’t want to say that they want to send Milan to Europe over us, but look at the games played today and yesterday….

“We’ll keep fighting until the last second, because things change from the inside, fighting and working, we never give up.”

Lazio director Igli Tare had also suggested after last night’s 1-0 defeat to Milan that “everyone knows where the power lies.”
