Cagliari have used a legendary phrase from his Leicester City days to announce that Claudio Ranieri has returned to Sardinia after 31 years.

They used the image of a traditional Sardinian bell used on livestock, with the words ‘Dilidin Dilidon’ on it.

This was what Ranieri said in that famous Leicester City press conference to describe how he woke up his players, although in English it was ‘translated’ to Dilly Ding Dilly Dong.

The coach has been chosen to replace Fabio Liverani, who was sacked earlier this week, with the club sitting 14th in the Serie B table.

Ranieri has signed a contract to June 2025, returning to the club where his management career truly took off with back-to-back promotions from Serie C to the top flight from 1988 to 1991.

He has been out of work since Watford fired him in January 2022, and before that the 71-year-old had a lengthy career including Napoli, Fiorentina, Valencia, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Parma, Juventus, Roma, Inter, AS Monaco, Leicester City, Nantes, Fulham, Sampdoria and the Greece national team.
