The iconic goalkeeper has been with the Old Lady since 2001, when he joined the club from Parma.

Speaking to the Maurizio Contanzo Show, the 40-year-old explained how despite his family being predominantly Juve fans, his affection for Trapattoni at one stage saw him switch allegiances to their arch rivals.

“After a couple of years supporting Juve – because all my family were Juventini – I fell in love with Trapattoni,” Buffon began.

“I liked the fact that he whistled, for me as a child that was great!

“He was an incredible character and loved by all of Italy. He went to Inter and for a while I also followed Inter.”

The former Italy shot-stopper added he now identifies as a Genoa supporter, although there have been several other teams he has held in high regard.

“When I started to grow up a little, I started supporting Genoa, who became the team for whom I have always had a certain sympathy.

“There were lots of other smaller teams I sympathised with – Galeone’s Pescara, Zeman’s Foggia, Avellino.

“I liked the little teams because I wanted them to realise their dreams as well.”
