Captain Gigi Buffon says Italy must be “modest” going into Euro 2016 but “without giving up on dreaming”.

The Azzurri go into this summer’s tournament in France with Claudio Marchisio and Marco Verratti both injured, and a tough-looking group featuring Belgium, Sweden and the Republic of Ireland.

“We start under the radar, we have important absences but we’re not lacking in spirit,” Buffon told reporters at a sponsors’ event today.

“We have to be modest, but without giving up on dreaming and thinking we can have a good Euros. We have to become a team quickly.

“We at Juventus are coming off a winning cycle, so we can transmit some good things. Even though we’re not the strongest, the important thing is not to start with a resigned spirit.

“There are seven games, and in such a short time anything can happen, it’s not like a League campaign. If you find the right balance as the Euros go on, you can go far.”
