Jorge Sampaoli had also been in talks, but his wage demands of €2.6m may have been what put Lazio off, as Prandelli represents a significantly less expensive option.

The tactician took Fiorentina into the Champions League, before leaving to take over as Azzurri Coach.

Having led the national team to the final of Euro 2012, however, a disastrous 2014 World Cup saw Prandelli walk away.

Having then joined Galatasaray, he was sacked after only a few months and has been out of work since, but now appears to be ready to take over in Rome for next season.
