Boniek played for the Giallorossi between 1985 and 1988 and believes that his old side should have been able to beat City, while calling on them to win the Europa League.

“I’ve seen many great things from Roma recently, and less good things such as the game against City,” the former midfielder reflected to Radio Centro Suono.

“Rome played poorly in that game, they were too sloppy after a very good first 20 minutes.

“They missed an opportunity to go through, because City were without a lot of key players, Roma could have beaten them.

“It’s a shame, because Roma need to be playing in the Champions League, but for now there’s the Europa League which is still a major tournament.

“Roma need to win in Europe to attract great players.

“An ambitious and strong team with a deep squad like Roma’s should aim to win everything.”

Boniek also plied his trade for Roma’s Scudetto rivals Juventus in his playing career, and the President of the Polish FA has given his verdict on the two teams.

“Unfortunately Roma sometimes suffer from drops in intensity as happened against Sassuolo.

“Juve have less drops in intensity, these kinds of ups and downs can undermine Roma in the League.

“The two teams are evenly matched, but Juve are slight favourites for the Scudetto, they seem more determined to play for every point.”
