Giacomo Bonaventura insists ‘now’s the time for Milan to win something’ after urging his teammates to emulate their Supercoppa success of 2016.

Bonaventura was one of Milan’s successful penalty takers during their shootout victory over Juventus in Doha, and the two sides reignite their rivalry in Jeddah on Wednesday.

“It was a time when we were playing well,” the injured midfielder told the Rossoneri’s official website.

“We had our ideas on how to play and we prepared for the game well. In fact, we didn’t just win the trophy. We also managed to play very well.

“My goal? I’d studied Suso and got to grips with his way of playing. I’d worked out the timing of his runs.

“That season I didn’t only score from one of his assists in Doha but on other occasions too.

“I was tense when I went up for the penalty, but not too much. I knew how I wanted to take it and where to put it.

“I aimed for the corner, I kicked it hard and it went well. I confess: if someone told me before the game that we’d win, I wouldn’t have believed it.

“I felt great joy after Pasalic’s penalty and it was a beautiful party. I then spent the holidays in Doha and ideally I’d have continued celebrating.

“Victories like this reward your many sacrifices and effort in training. Now’s the time for us to try to win something.

“We must take advantage of this match because it’s important for Milan to win. Every season Milan must aim to win something.

“To be honest, we were a bit worried about the difference in weather and time zone. There was lots of things we needed to adjust to before the game.

“I wonder if we’ll settle in the best way. We asked ourselves that before we got to Doha, but then everything was fine.”
