President Silvio Berlusconi admitted he still enjoys winning after bringing Monza to Serie B and claimed Milan’s new owner had a difficult job of replacing him.

The former Rossoneri owner has brought Monza to the second tier of Italian football and praised his players and staff, underlining the importance of CEO Adriano Galliani.

“Of course, otherwise I wouldn’t still be competing. You can’t win if you don’t give your all and don’t have the passion,” he told TeleLombardia. “I enjoyed the news of promotion, I toasted at the table with my daughter without being able to have a public party.

“The merit is of the lads on the pitch and the coach, as well as the managers, in particular Adriano Galliani.

“He has always been highly active and present. It’s probably also thanks to me, for every game I spoke to the players, reminding them of the main objectives.

“At Monza I have continued to do what I did at Milan, with the results we have seen.”

Berlusconi insists he only targets a great season in Serie B and downplayed the chances of targeting back-to-back promotions and an immediate climb to Serie A.

“I wish! You don’t have to say it. We are preparing to do well in Serie B, let’s think about bringing in four or five reinforcements.

“There’s a rule in Serie B and we can bring in players who are under 23 years old, we are looking for the best players from the other Serie B teams.”

The former Diavolo has claimed he would both be ‘happy and suffer’ if Monza were to face Milan in the future.

“Maybe I won’t wear any scarf. Today my hear is beating 50 per cent for Milan and 50 per cent for Monza. Half of me will be happy and half will suffer.

“But now, we think about playing well in Serie B.”

Milan have struggled to cope with the demands at the top since Berlusconi’s reign and the former President has claimed it’s ‘not easy’ to find his own successor.

“To get good results, the players must have a lot of good things in mind. They need a club that embraces the players and a capable coach.

“The support of the President is important, I always know everything about every player, they see me almost as an older brother.

“It’s not easy to find a successor to Berlusconi. I think he did what he had to do, I’m still close to Milan and I try to give all the suggestions I think might be useful.”

Milan resume against Juventus in the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia on Friday, with the game tied at 1-1 after the first leg at San Siro.
