Former Roma and Italy defender Federico Balzaretti is reportedly set to become SPAL’s next sporting director.

SPAL are looking for a new SD after Davide Vagnati moved to Torino earlier in the month, but Calciomercato.it claims they have found their man.

As per the website, Balzaretti is in ‘absolute pole position’ to take over from Vagnati, ticking the boxes of a ‘young, confident and available’ executive.

The ex-Juventus and Palermo full-back helped Italy finish runners-up at Euro 2012 and subsequently signed for Roma.

As per the website, Balzaretti is in ‘absolute pole position’ to take over from Vagnati, ticking the boxes of a ‘young, confident and available’ executive.

The ex-Juventus and Palermo full-back helped Italy finish runners-up at Euro 2012 and subsequently signed for Roma.

However, he was forced to retire three years later – aged just 33 – with persistent hip problems.

The 38-year-old went on to become Roma’s loan player chief before vacating the role last summer, when he was the subject of an offer from the Ferrara side.
