The striker was dropped from the Italy squad by new Coach Antonio Conte for the friendly against the Netherlands, but he continues to make a big splash in the Premier League.

“You have to be ready for these opportunities. In the past we didn’t capitalise on opportunities but those days are long gone,” explained Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre at the Soccerex Global Convention.

The transfer cost £16m and on the very first day the club sold £50,000 worth of shirts.

That is calculated at around 770 adult jerseys costing £65 each.

One of the biggest problems in Italian football is a lack of revenue because of counterfeit shirts, which are openly sold outside the stadium.

As clubs rent the stadiums from the local council rather than own the venues, there are also rarely official club shops inside the arena on match day.
