The Marassi club have secured just six points from their opening 12 matches of the season, prompting the sacking of Ivan Juric following Saturday’s derby defeat to Sampdoria.

Ballardini, most recently in charge of Palermo, was quickly installed as the favourite to take over as Griffone boss for a third time. His re-appointment was officially confirmed this evening.

“I am happy to see you again,” Ballardini said in a brief exchange with reporters as he arrived at Genoa’s Pegli base to formally sign his contract.

“The mission is to do a good job for the club and for the fans.

“Staying up? I don’t know, we have enough about us.”

Ballardini’s first game in charge of the Rossoblu will be a trip to fellow strugglers Crotone, while his first home match comes a week later against Roma.
