The Welshman has been excellent whenever he was able to play this season, but his calf injury held him back for long spells, including almost all Champions League games so far.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the 26-year-old is taking a number of measures to make sure the next match doesn't knock him out again.

Against Celta Vigo, in a match which the Merengues won by 7-1, Bale played with both socks torn open at the back, in order to avoid pressuring the thigh.

Other measures to protect his muscles include the rather obscure practice of eating a great quantity of tomatoes, and refraining from driving his car, the pedal of which could strain his leg.
