Jorge Valdano says that Napoli and Fiorentina are 'Spanish teams', while Roma's Francesco Totti should be benched.

The former footballer, sporting director and director general of Real Madrid commented on his team ahead of their game against the Giallorossi.

“So far, Zinedine Zidane hasn't made any mistakes on the bench of Real,” he told La Repubblica. “In addition he has great communication skills, which is something I did not expect.

“His problem is that he doesn't have enough versions of Raul and he has too many versions of Zidane in his squad. Football is built on illusions and people expect him to replicate on the bench what he did on the pitch. That's not easy.”

Valdano then commented on the current season of Italian football.

“Fiorentina and Napoli look like Spanish teams. It's a revolution in form that replaces the obsession for tactics and physical preparation.

“We ought to create a school obsessed with play, where enough space is given to technique and creativity. But in Italy, revolutions only take place after a result.

“Totti? It's impossible to argue with a legend. But the Coach must make his formation with the best players of the week, not the best in history.

“Totti is 40 years old. If we footballers had known how hard it is to quit, we'd have taken up painting or sculpting instead, so we could go on forever.

“[Paulo] Dybala can become immense. He is like [Carlos] Tevez, but with less fury and more finesse.

“He can see things close up and far away at the same time. If he's marked within two square metres, he passes and starts a play 40 metres away.

“It takes character to score against Bayern [Munich] in the toughest minutes of the season. Paulo is an invitation to play good football.”
