Diego Godin is one of the players Cagliari are expected to sell in January and a return to Spain is likely, with Atletico Madrid and Real Betis interested.

The Sardinians are sliding down the standings towards relegation after just one Serie A victory all season, culminating in back-to-back 4-0 defeats to Inter and Udinese.

Following this weekend’s home loss, director of sport Stefano Capozucca said that some players had already seen their last game in the Cagliari jersey.

Uruguay international Godin is believed to be one of them, as he struggled in Serie A both at Inter and Cagliari.

According to Spanish newspaper Sport, a return to Atletico Madrid is on the cards for the veteran after playing there from 2010 to 2019, when he joined Inter as a free agent.

He could also possibly go back to Spain for a different club, as Real Betis are also believed to be interested in his services.

Godin turns 36 in February and is under contract with the Sardinians until June 2023.
