Alberto Aquilani is convinced that Fiorentina boss Vincenzo Montella is on the way to becoming a coaching great.

“Montella is destined for success,” the playmaker noted to Sky Sport Italia. “He has innovative footballing ideas.

“I am sure that he will work at the very top of the Italian game. Saying that, for now, we’ll keep a tight grip on him.”

The former striker was handed his first top-flight job by Roma half way through the 2010-11 season. He then proved to be a success in 2011-12 at Catania.

There was talk in the summer that he would return to Roma, but they opted for Zdenek Zeman and Montella moved to Tuscany instead.

Aquilani, who is on the mend after an Achilles heel injury, is also confident he made the right decision in leaving Liverpool for the Viola.

“I knew that there was a base here to have a great season,” he added. “It’s hard to pinpoint an objective right now, but we want to finish as high as possible.

“To be honest, we should have a few more points in the table.”

Fiorentina are joint fifth in the standings, eight points behind leaders Juventus and Napoli.
