The Fiorentina midfielder redirected a Dani Osvaldo shot with his knee in stoppages for a 2-2 World Cup qualifying draw.
“It was certainly an upset for Denmark, but these things happen in football. It was a fortunate goal…” he told Rai Sport in Copenhagen.
“Osvaldo was aiming for my knee, wasn’t he? Of course! It’s my first Italy goal played away from home. I thought I might’ve been offside, but I wasn’t.
“When you play in these stadiums it is always complicated, as Denmark were giving their all to earn qualification.
“We were fortunate in some occasions, conceded when we shouldn’t have done, so in the end the draw was the right result.”
Nicklas Bendtner equalised in first half stoppages, when the Azzurri appeared to lose concentration.
“Perhaps we thought the first half was already over and wanted to go into the break 1-0 up. It was the only way Denmark could score at that time, as Bendtner is good in the air. He proved to be their most dangerous player.”
Aquilani is one of those fighting for a spot in the World Cup squad, as there is particular competition in midfield.
“I am very happy to be part of this group, then of course the season will dictate the choices for the World Cup.
“A goal helps, but there’s a long way to go. I think the amount of competition is very good for Italy and the Coach will be glad to have these problems.”
Mario Balotelli was not even in the stands and Aquilani reveals the Milan striker had a temperature.
“He didn’t come down to eat with the team either, so he wasn’t feeling well. He had a muscular problem on the first day, but seemed motivated.”
