Former Roma Coach Aurelio Andreazzoli analyses Rudi Garcia and Luciano Spalletti exits. “If everyone runs away, there must be a reason.”

This evening the Giallorossi host Inter at the Stadio Olimpico and it’ll be the first return for Spalletti since he left in May.

“Spalletti’s second spell was more difficult,” ex-assistant manager and caretaker boss Andreazzoli told La Repubblica.

“He found a team that was struggling, put it back on track, got results – which are the only things Presidents look at – and played good football. It was far tougher the second time around.

“There was never the possibility of joining Luciano’s staff at Inter, though I would’ve happily continued working with him, but it’s time I retire and stop travelling now.”

Andreazzoli was famously on the Roma bench when they lost the 2013 Coppa Italia Final to rivals Lazio.

“They massacred me because we hit the woodwork and Lazio scored on a Bogdan Lobont flap. It was a horrendous game, both teams played really badly.

“Nobody remembers what I did during my time there: the best defence after Juve, I took over the side nine points behind Lazio and we finished in front of them, I invented Miralem Pjanic as a playmaker, beat the Bianconeri and created a group that is still in the first team.

“Unfortunately, the atmosphere around Roma is incapable of evaluating things objectively. Things begin with enthusiasm there, then the situations deteriorate. They’ve been through 13 Coaches in 13 seasons. If everyone runs away, there must be a reason.

“They’ve gone through Claudio Ranieri, Zdenek Zeman, Luis Enrique, Spalletti – these are not flops. There is no objectivity in the way their work is analysed and the praise is even more damaging than the criticism. They lay down the red carpet for you after two games, you are invited to dinner, called by politicians, and that removes your focus. They tried it with me too.

“Rudi Garcia came second twice, got a record of 10 consecutive victories. He was considered Napoleon first, then they treated him like an idiot. Does that seem normal to you?

“Now there’s Eusebio Di Francesco and they say he’s too kind – they said the same about me. If you’re friends with everyone, they say you must be a fool. Instead, you are just someone who makes sure the rules are respected. I looked soft because I hugged the players, but when you shout at them there are no cameras around.

“Tonight I am cheering on Roma, but also to a degree Spalletti.”
