Napoli suffered heavy defeats to Liverpool and Wolfsburg during preseason but bounced back with an opening-day victory over Lazio, and Ancelotti made it clear the criticism at the start of his reign ‘didn’t bother me’.

“It was an important decision,” the former Milan and Real Madrid boss told DAZN.

“First of all, I wanted to go back to Italy and work in Italian again. After that, there was the project put forward by the club.

“The team have so much quality. Perhaps they haven’t peaked yet, but they’re very close to doing so. I hope they can with me.

“Naples is beautiful, there’s a wonderful landscape here and its people are very respectful. They always want to take pictures with me, but it doesn’t bother me. In fact, it makes me happy.

“The criticism didn’t bother me, we were focused on our work. We knew about the problems we’d face at the start.

“If you’re focused on your work, you don’t listen to what’s being said around you.”
