Carlo Ancelotti reportedly tried to convince President Aurelio De Laurentiis to keep him in charge at Napoli.

Gennaro Gattuso succeeded Ancelotti on Wednesday, just hours after the 60-year-old guided the Partenopei into the last 16 of the Champions League with a 4-0 win against Racing Genk.

Il Mattino claims Carletto tried to convince Aurelio De Laurentiis to change his mind during his last days at the helm of the Azzurri, continuing to ask the patron: “Are you sure?”

But the decision was already made, due to the club's poor run of form in Serie A, and fellow ex-Milan man Gattuso will be in the dugout for his first match as Napoli coach against Parma this weekend.

Ancelotti has since been linked with the vacant position at Arsenal in the Premier League, where Freddie Ljungberg is currently caretaker following the dismissal of Unai Emery last month.
