Pietro Anastasi believes Graziano Pellè can be “the extra weapon” Italy need against Malta tonight.

The Euro 2016 qualifier kicks off at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT) and the Southampton forward is expected to start alongside Ciro Immobile.

“I don’t think Italy should have problems this evening, even if it’s best not to underestimate anyone considering the many surprises we’ve seen in recent Euro qualifiers,” former striker Anastasi told Tuttomercatoweb.

Anastasi won the 1968 European Championship and scored eight goals in 25 Italy caps.

“Pellè has taken a long road around Europe, earning this opportunity to wear the Italy jersey with hard work and sacrifice.

“He will play with the hunger and desire to prove himself, aiming ever higher, and this can be the extra weapon for Conte’s team.

“I think he can do well tonight.”

If he plays, it will be Pellè’s senior Italy debut, as he only ever featured at Under-21 level.
