Massimiliano Allegri insisted he “did not see big mistakes” in the 4-2 defeat to Roma. “I think Milan played a good game.”

The Rossoneri were 4-0 down before snatching two late goals after Marquinhos had been sent off at the Stadio Olimpico.

“I think it was a strange game where we could’ve taken the lead and instead conceded from a corner. Then we could’ve equalised and they immediately doubled their advantage,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“We definitely have to improve our defending from set plays, while we were too disorganised and hasty in attack.

“After the break we were trying to get back into the game and conceded another two goals against the run of play, while the Roma goalkeeper had to perform quite a few tough saves.

“I think we need to improve in defence, but I did not see any big mistakes tonight. Maybe we weren’t aggressive enough on their counter-attacks, probably because we feared Roma’s forwards.

“Sometimes games go against you and we contributed to the result, but at the end of the day I think Milan played a good game. Roma deserve credit for making the most of the space we left and we know how dangerous Zdenek Zeman’s teams can be in these situations.”

Milan had been on a run of four consecutive victories, but are now five points adrift of Roma and eight off the Champions League spots.

“I think the Giallorossi are one of the best teams in Italy and I am amazed we are so close to them in the table,” insisted Allegri.

“We fought back to earn many points in the last 10 rounds. We’ll try to reach half-way on 30 points so that we can push hard in the second half of the season and close in on the top places.

“People think we go from the stars to the gutter in a millisecond, as don’t forget we went into this game with four wins and a draw against Napoli in six games. Of course we can do better and the club will certainly do something in the transfer window, but it’s not as if we were challenging for second place before this defeat.

“There has to be greater balance when talking about Milan, as this is a new and young side.”
