“Juventus are among the favourites, but then avoiding the teams who finish first is very important,” Allegri said ahead of tomorrow’s match with Young Boys.

“There’s Barcelona, Manchester City, Real Madrid, perhaps Paris Saint-Germain… Then we hope all the Italians go through tonight.

“That doesn’t mean we’ll have an easy Last 16, but certainly a less tough one.

“It’s certainly more competitive [this year], I think the level is always rising. There year there are many teams that can get to the end: Juve, Barcelona, PSG, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Liverpool…

“This year the Last 16 will only be less tough if we finish first, otherwise we’ll have a tie against one of these teams.

“From the quarter-finals onward it’ll be a really difficult Champions League, and it’ll be impossible to find a soft quarter-final or semi-final.”
