Demetrio Albertini is embarrassed by the Carlo Tavecchio scandal – ‘we see it as a gaffe, but they’re racist phrases’.

The FIGC President was recorded making homophobic and anti-semitic remarks, adding to previous comments about women and black players.

Albertini was the challenger to Tavecchio’s election in summer 2014, and warns that the latest comments can’t simply be shrugged off.

“The situation is embarrassing now,” the former Milan midfielder told Radio 24.

“First though, it has to be said that the CONI President [Giovanni Malago] has already said there are no conditions to intervene and appoint someone to be in charge of the Federation.

“I repeat, however, that the situation is embarrassing, and everyone can see it. In today’s society, words carry weight, and if you have a role like that [FIGC President] you can’t make mistakes in communication, it’s a representative role.

“With us, we saw it as yet another gaffe, but abroad they’re seen as racist phrases.

“Being Brianzolo [from western Lombardy], I make jokes too, but I repeat: the problem is the role he plays and what he represents.”
