Fiorentina President Andrea Della Valle warned the referee in their defeat to Roma “could cost us €30m.”

The Viola were beaten 1-0 in stoppages on Saturday evening, but only after Daniele De Rossi’s handling offence was not spotted by Paolo Silvio Mazzoleni.

“There was a serious error of judgment that could cost us €30m,” said Della Valle of the denied penalty.

“It is an important sum and it could make a big difference for us. Referees are human and I want to think it was only a mistake, so that there is nothing bigger behind it…”

Fiorentina had been one point behind Milan in the race for a Champions League spot, but have now fallen four points adrift.

“Should we raise our voice to protest? I have done when it was needed. We believe in fair play, but we’re not stupid. We ensure that we are respected and give values to football. It’s a shame some people consider us weak for taking that approach.

“I am sure that when watching it back on television, the referee also realised the mistake he made.”

The Tuscans are still in fourth place and take on Siena tomorrow evening with Giuseppe Rossi receiving his first call-up.

“Vincenzo Montella is the centre of our project. The lads have to win the remaining three games for him and for the fans. Now we’ve got to end on a high. After so many sacrifices, we are challenging for something important.

“At the end of the season we will sit down around a table and evaluate how to improve the squad so we can confirm ourselves at this level.”
