Former Inter striker Adriano admits he expected the Nerazzurri to achieve great results this season despite Romelu Lukaku and Achraf Hakimi’s sales.

The former Brazilian striker released an interview with Tuttosport, head of the Milan derby, which will take place on Saturday at 17.00 UK time.

Scorer of 74 goals in 177 appearances with Inter between 2004 and 2009, one of Adriano’s most iconic goals with the Nerazzurri was in a derby clash in 2005 when he found the back of the net touching the ball with his arm.

It was not disallowed because Adriano had first touched the ball with his head. With VAR and new FIFA rules, his goal would not stand today.

“It was different at that time,” Adriano said.

“I received no sanctions from Lega Serie A and even if I had touched the ball with my arm, it was not intentional.

“Inter have many chances to win the title this season,” Adriano continued.

“I hope they win the derby, but anything can happen in these games.”

Adriano was the idol of former Inter star Romelu Lukaku who left the Nerazzurri in the summer to join Chelsea in a €115m deal.

Nevertheless, Inter are still the Serie A table leaders and have the best-attacking record in Serie A. Did Adriano expect it?

“Yes, or at least I hoped so,” the former striker said.

“The Nerazzurri have a great organization and a great team with top players such as Lautaro Martinez and Alexis Sanchez.

“Simone Inzaghi is also an excellent coach. Antonio Conte is also really good, but Inzaghi’s results have been better so far.”
