Ignazio Abate has conceded that he was the man responsible for Milan’s 1-0 defeat to city rivals Inter on Sunday.

The right-back’s individual error allowed the ball through to Diego Milito who was then able to ripple the net.

“I had the feeling that I could get to the ball,” the defender told Sky Sport Italia after the Stadio Meazza encounter.

“However, the ball squirmed away from me and that was how the goal that decided the game was born.

“Perhaps I could have held my ground and then decided to take on Milito with my speed…

“However, in that fraction of a second on the field of play, I did think that I could intercept the ball. I take full responsibility and I apologise to the fans.”

The defeat saw Juventus move a point clear of Milan at the top of the table, but also allowed the Nerazzurri to close to within five points of the Diavolo.

“The loss today doesn’t change things,” Abate continued. “We’ll fight until the very end for the Scudetto even if we know it will be tough.

“Today we were not able to recover after going a goal down because they closed us down well at the back and we couldn’t open up their defence.”
