Diego Milito describes Mauro Icardi as ‘exceptional’ but is unsure whether the Inter man can win the Capocanniere award.

The Argentine forward has begun the season with six Serie A goals in as many matches but still lies four behind Juventus man Paulo Dybala.

And with a host of other stiff competition in Italy’s top-flight, his compatriot Milito believes the race to be top-scorer will be hard to predict.

“Icardi is an exceptional centre-forward who has an incredible eye for goal,” the former Inter man told Corriere dello Sport.

“I hope that this year he scores a lot and takes Inter very far.

“As for whether I think he can be the top scorer in Serie A, however, I don’t know.

“I think there will be a strong rivalry with one of his compatriots [Dybala] and another Argentine [Higuain] has shown throughout his career that he can score a lot of goals.

“It will be a good battle between the three of them. The happiest person will be Sampaoli, the national Coach, who will have an embarrassment of riches to choose from.”

Milito also discussed Inter’s upcoming derby match with Milan, which follows the international break.

“I really hope from my heart that Inter win the derby because I know the importance the fans give to the match.

“Beating Milanwould be important for the development of the team.

“It would give a guaranteed psychological boost, just like the 3-1 win at Roma.”
