The Merengues were 2-0 up, saw themselves pegged back to 2-2 by Lautaro Martinez and Ivan Perisic, but Rodrygo pounced on a defensive error for the winning goal.

“We won a difficult match against an Inter side that scored two goals. It’s a Champions League level fixture, it was tough, but at the end of the day we found the third goal that is worth three points,” Zidane told Sky Sport Italia.

“It was a final for us and for them too, so I am happy with the result and the three very important points.”

This remains a wide open group, as Borussia Monchengladbach beat Shakhtar Donetsk 6-0 today to go top on five points, followed by the Ukrainians and Real Madrid on four, plus Inter with two.

“However, it’s still very difficult for us in this group, we have to go to Italy next and it’s going to be another real battle. It was important for us to get the three points today, so I’m happy for the players, who put in a lot of effort against a good team.”
