Cagliari may have gone six games without a win after their 1-1 draw with Sassuolo, but Walter Zenga believes his team now have an ‘identity’.

Cagliari managed to battle back with 10 men against a high-flying Sassuolo side, and Zenga praised his squad for playing with ‘focus and humility’.

“I’m happy because we played against a great team who had lots of attempts on goal against teams like Juventus,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“In the first half, we were too passive and deep. In the second half, the lads responded well and perhaps the red card helped us in that it gave us the strength to come back.

“The boys played with focus and humility, and with a bit more in our tanks we could’ve done even better.

“We played against a team with a solid structure and a great coach who has been working with them for two years.

“I‘ve been coaching this team for a month and what I was able to do was give them an identity.

“It’s also worth remembering that I have only three midfielders available, which is why I asked my guys to wait for our opponents in the first half.

“There are always objectives to reach, among them reaching 47 points. However, we have top teams coming up.”

Andrea Carboni saw red for the second time in only his sixth Serie A appearance, but Zenga backed the defender to still shine at the top level.

“In some ways, he showed he could be a Serie A players. Some of it was Mattiello’s fault as he failed to help a teammate under pressure.”
