“I refuse to put the blame on any individual,” he told Corriere dello Sport. “I do not like this game where we make Balotelli the scapegoat.
“Especially after everyone was praising his goal against England in the first game.
“This is a cultural problem.
“It is difficult for the system to change if the characters involved are always men who give little importance to the football player.
“I know that in football there are those that only think of making money. I want to fight them.
“From my bench I see men running, not money – I see beating hearts, not coffers.”
The former Roma man then went on to comment on modern-day footballers, and the loss of team spirit.
“This is a professional sport, and we have to work seriously. Pjanic, for example, believes that the pitch is a playground – I think that’s wrong.
“Before the players were part of a group, but now it’s every man for himself with headphones on and surfing the internet.
“I must say that at Cagliari we have a good group. I have a lot of young players who want to work.
“I believe in personal relationships – I hate people using their phones. I want the lads to be playing cards.”
