“Last night, a few minutes before the final whistle, I expressed myself in a way that was misinterpreted,” wrote the 19-year-old on Instagram.

“It’s important for me to clarify my thinking. I’m a Roma player, a professional, and I express myself on the pitch.

“I’ve always thought about playing with the maximum effort to help the team and club achieve their objectives for the season.

“Then there are other professionals, like my agent and the directors, who deal with contracts and who will be able to manage the situation as best as possible.”

A new contract for the midfielder is not expected to be issue, with Gazzetta dello Sport claiming an agreement has already been struck
